Help & Practical Advice

What to do in an emergency

  • It is always best to have a prearranged plan of what to do in an emergency, be it a water leak, gas leak, or boiler malfunction.
  • It is also helpful to know where the stopcock / main switch can be turned on or off.
  • If unable to locate the stopcock or main switch, or they are hard to use, we would be happy  to provide assistance.

What to do in the event of a serious water leak

  • Turn off the electrics at the mains first, then all the electric switches in the house.
  • Turn off the water supply to the property at the stopcock.
  • Empty the water from the tank by turning on all taps.
  • Contact a trade registered SNIPEF plumber to rectify the problem.
  • Take photos of damage before beginning a clean up, as evidence for any insurance claim that might be necessary.

What to do in the event of a gas leak

  • Gas can be odourless, so it is particularly difficult to detect a leak.
  • (TIP - it is relatively cheap to fit a gas or carbon monoxide detector).
  • If gas is detected, do not turn any electric switches on or off, do not smoke.
  • Open the doors and windows to release the gas.
  • Turn off the gas supply at the meter.
  • For a gas leak, call Transco on Freefone 0800-111999.  Do not use a telephone from within the property. Use a mobile outside or use a neighbour's phone.
  • Gas leaks should first be checked by Transco who will ensure that it is safe, but they are not duty bound to make good repairs. If further work is necessary, contact a Gas Safe Registered Installer who are the only tradesmen permitted to work on gas pipes.

The key to handling an emergency situation is to have an idea of what to do before it actually happens.  In the case of utility supplies, it is important to know where the main stopcock and switches are and to check that they work.
